GOD DOUBLE VINYL LP REISSUE

GOD Double Vinyl Reissue LP features the seminal Melbourne band's 1987 mini-album Rock Is Hell and For Lovers Only (1989) together for the first time on full waxy goodness, and will be available from Friday18th May at all good record shacks (via Z-Man Records/Fuse Distribution).

GOD was a giant exploding quagmire of a calamity of a band, but they had their bad days as well. At their best, which was neither live nor in the studio – maybe it was during band meetings – GOD sounded like a ten train smash-up in Tin Railroad Town, which was hilarious, because they were trying to encapsulate stadium rock at least half of the time and the "monster riffs" – and they had those, and some sneakily grabby songs as well – often sounded like a kids' playgroup had broken into the bottle recycling bin combined with that siren song of crap amps buzzing and wheezing you sometimes hear just before they blow up.

You just looked at those guys, and even listened to them, and you just knew right away they were the coolest thing going – a buncha hairy brat kids doing KISS meets punk, heads down and blasting away like a mining company that's just been given the green light on a few hectares of unexploited desert.

SNOOKS LA VIE

Dipping into the classic early 70's sounds of America, Another Place In Time is the debut album for Adelaide troubadour Snooks La Vie who has been a prominent figure on the roots circuit for the best part of fifteen years. Credited for his soulful vocals and authentic delivery of the harmonica, Snooks La Vie has quietly secured the endorsement of the Australian music industry and proudly counts many contemporaries including Troy Cassar-Daley, Renee Geyer and Ross Wilson as fans. Staying true to the era, the album includes vintage amp noises, and was recorded organically, utilising the technological limitations of the time to capture its spirit.

An astute interpreter of roots-based music, Snooks La Vie performs with an electrifying energy and maturity. Snooks says he wanted to keep the record stripped back with lots of space to showcase the songs in their truest form, so the album was recorded with just guitars, bass, drums & harmonica.

sleepwalks

'THE MILK HAS GONE SOUR' CD

sleepwalks

sleepwalks are a Brisbane rock band who happily wear their musical influences on their sleeves. Clearly they have grown up on a steady diet of 70s punk, 80s indie rock and 90s slackersludge bands (think Mission Of Burma, Dinosaur Jr and Nirvana), but undeniably the standout feature is their leanings towards legendary US band The Replacements. Their secret weapon though is they glean from the past and make it relevant to today.

THIS FROZEN STAR

SECONDHAND SMOKE CD

The Bonniwells

Newly relocated Melbourne based (former Brisbane) band This Frozen Star release their debut album Secondhand Smoke just as we round the bend signaling the end of a solid year of Australian album releases.

The album contains eleven tracks capturing the gleaned essence of many acts such as local heroes The Triffids, Augie March and The Fauves, as well as internationals such as Iron and Wine, Wilco, Spoon, The Pixies, Nick Drake, Neko Case, Band Of Horses etc. The band cite whisky, cheap scotch and broken hearts as their influences and listening to Secondhand Smoke you can see why. It’s a rollicking good and fun times album, with a tint of lyrical sadness of love gone sideways.

THE BONNIWELLS

UNPROFITABLE SERVANT CD

The Bonniwells

Channeling the punk ethic of yesteryear and combining a marriage of super-cool garage, hyperactive surf guitar, gymnastic mod out-takes, swampy badass, and garage explosions comes the debut CD Unprofitable Servant by Melbourne trio The Bonniwells, due for release in late November, 2010 on Z-Man Records.

Unprofitable Servant is reminiscent of dropping a coin in an interpretive 60s psych-garage jukebox…. their music comes at you like a king wave of jangled guitars, screams and howls, and a driving rhythmic drum beat. The band features members of The Frowning Clouds, Bleach and Last Gypsys.

GILES FIELD

...TELLS A STORY CD

Giles Field

Once upon a time, at a party in Melbourne, a boy meets a girl… This recording tells their story. Traralgon (Vic) based singer-songwriter, Giles Field returns with his own special brand of lo-fi, refreshingly honest, warts’n’all, stripped back musings…Tells A Story, which over fourteen songs, weaves a narrative about love and life on the streets of Melbourne.

Contrasting to his Tim Oxley-produced debut Too Many Love Songs, this collection sees Giles return to his acoustic anti-folk roots, a challenge to the over-produced sound omnipresent on contemporary radio. Giles’ raw, almost-punk guitar style and unique vocals are the trademarks of these home recordings, delivered in an unadorned and deceptively simple way, which provide a beguiling fly-on-the-wall snapshot of the life of Giles Field.

THE CORALINAS

DEBUT ALBUM: FREE ENERGY

Composer and guitarist Cam Butler (Silver Ray) teamed up with renowned Australian drummer, Mark Dawson in mid 2007 to work on the recording of Cam’s album Dark Times (Symphony No. 2). A series of jam sessions followed from which was born The Coralinas.

With the addition of Mark’s drumming, The Coralinas are a natural progression of Cam’s solo work for guitar and live looping. Mark has a rich musical pedigree – working with Ed Kuepper through the late 80’s and 90’s, he now plays with The Blackeyed Susans as well as The Coralinas.
